On Saturday June 11th, employees of Barclays Bank of Kenya handed over new houses to nine families who benefited from the bank’s kind donation in January this year. The houses constructed through a shilling-to-shilling fundraising initiative mooted by the bank’s staff under the social responsibility, were officially handed over by Barclays Bank of Kenya Director of Corporate Banking, Mr. Nick Mbuvi.
During the ceremony at the IDP camp, Mr.Mbuvi noted that the handover of the houses was the culmination of a strong relationship between the bank and the families in Maai Mahiu IDP camp.
“It is a great moment for us all to be here to dedicate these houses that we were able to put with the help of our very good stakeholders who responded to our call to support Habitat for Humanity Kenya ‘initiative of providing decent shelter to these families”, said Mr.Mbuvi.
Barclays Bank team and other stakeholders present commended Habitat for Humanity Kenya for their great work of helping the families move from tattered tents and from the vagaries associated with extreme weather conditions to decent stone houses.
“When we came here early this year, there were not many houses, but today we see great transformation in the lives of these families”, noted Mr.Mbuvi. He called on other corporate organizations to join hands with Habitat to help rebuild the lives of the remaining families affected by the post election violence of 2008/2009.
Habitat for Humanity Kenya National Director, Mr. Simon Nyabwengi thanked the Barclays Bank team and other partners present for responding to the plight of the families. ”Today, marks the beginning of the resettlement process for the remaining 105 families who are still living in tattered tents and we are confident that more partners will come on board and help us provide decent and safe housing for the remaining families”, added Mr.Nyabwengi.
For Monica Wanjeri, one of the nine house beneficiaries, it was not only a crowning joy for her to move into a new house but the beginning of a brighter future knowing well that her two grandchildren will now have a safe and decent home to live. “I raise my arms up to our good Lord for letting the stars of kindness shine in the hearts of Barclays Bank staff and all those who have come here today to witness this ceremony today”.
As part of our fundraising initiative, Habitat for Humanity Kenya is currently running a campaign in collaboration with Family Media TV. The campaign dubbed “Building Hope- one people united” is a call to Kenyans from walks of faith to respond to the urgent housing needs of these families.
